Protecting Children. Preventing Tragedy

Burn injuries are among the most devastating traumas a child can suffer—and yet, the majority are entirely preventable. At The House of Charity, we are committed to breaking this cycle through education, awareness, and community engagement.

The Facts Are Urgent

  • Hot water scalds are the leading cause of fatal burns in children under five.
  • Burns are:
    • The third leading cause of accidental death in children from birth to 9 years.
    • The sixth leading cause for children ages 10–14.
    • One of the top 10 injuries treated in emergency rooms for children under five.
  • According to the World Health Organization, burn injuries cause 180,000 deaths globally each year, ranking as the fifth most common non-fatal childhood injury.

Every single day:

  • 3 children die from burn injuries.
  • 685 children require medical care.
  • 41 children are hospitalized due to burns.

Why It Matters

A severe, non-fatal burn is one of the most painful and life-altering injuries a child can endure. Beyond physical trauma, burn injuries can have lasting emotional, social, and financial impacts—not just on the child, but on the entire family. Many families spend years coping with the consequences of an accident that could have been avoided.

But here’s the good news:

  • At least 50% of all burn injuries are preventable.
  • Up to 75% of scald burns in children can be avoided with simple, proactive safety measures.

Our Mission: Educate to Prevent

The Fire Safety and Burn Prevention Education Program by The House of Charity is built to reduce these injuries through life-saving knowledge and skills.

We teach:

  1. Prevention – How to eliminate risks and avoid burns and fires before they start.
  2. Protection – How to act quickly and safely in case of a fire or burn injury.
  3. First Aid – How to respond effectively to reduce injury severity and support recovery.

Our Four-Pillar Approach

Safety Smart Babies Program

Part of the Fire Safety and Burn Prevention Education Initiative by The House of Charity

The Safety Smart Babies Program is a life-saving educational initiative by The House of Charity, developed especially for expecting and new parents, as well as caregivers. Focused on burn and fire prevention for infants and young children, this program addresses one of the most common but preventable causes of injury in early childhood—burns occurring in the home.

Why This Program Matters

The majority of childhood burn injuries happen at home—and most are preventable. Through early education and awareness, we aim to significantly reduce the number of burn incidents in infants and young children by empowering families and caregivers with vital safety knowledge.

What the Program Teaches

Our Fire Safety and Burn Prevention curriculum equips families with:

  • Prevention Measures – How to create a safer home environment and avoid common fire and burn risks.
  • Emergency Skills – What to do immediately if a fire or burn occurs, including how to react safely and quickly.
  • First Aid Techniques – Basic first aid guidance to minimize injury severity until professional help arrives.

Who the Program Serves

  • Expecting and new parents
  • Families with children in preschool through 5th grade
  • Caregivers and childcare providers
  • Hospitals, pediatric clinics, and parenting classes
  • Participants from all demographics, both locally and globally

We offer our programming virtually, in-person, and across social media platforms to ensure wide access and engagement.

Partner Hospitals Receive:

  • Custom Burn Prevention Kits: Including brochures, home safety checklists, and baby bath thermometers, provided at discharge, during childbirth classes, and at pediatric appointments.
  • Expert-Led Presentations: Delivered to parents, caregivers, social workers, nursing school faculty, and child advocacy professionals.
  • CCTV Messaging: Fire safety and burn prevention videos and messages ready to display in waiting rooms.
  • Children’s Storybook: “Izza’s Tea Party”—a beautifully illustrated book that teaches burn prevention in an engaging way for young children.
  • Bilingual Resources: All materials and presentations are available in English and Spanish.

Join us in protecting the most vulnerable—before a preventable injury happens.

Global Burn Prevention Education Program

“This Tea Stain Never Goes Away.”

At The House of Charity, our experience caring for burn patients over two decades has revealed a painful truth: 80% of burns among children under the age of seven in both urban and rural Pakistan are caused by hot tea—and nearly all occur at home. With an estimated half a billion cups of tea prepared daily in Pakistan, the risk is widespread and deeply rooted in household habits.

In response to this alarming reality, we launched the Chai Ka Nishaan (The Tea Stain) Burn Prevention Campaign on November 1, 2019, in memory of Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed, a passionate advocate for public health and safety.

About the Campaign

The Tea Stain Campaign aims to:

  • Raise public awareness of the dangers of hot tea spills, particularly for young children.
  • Promote safe behaviors around the preparation and serving of hot beverages.
  • Provide first aid education to reduce the severity of burn injuries and prevent dangerous infections.
  • Dispel harmful myths about traditional burn treatments (such as using oil, ink, sugar, or toothpaste) which can worsen injuries.

Featured Media & Storytelling

Our campaign includes impactful storytelling tools designed to shift behaviors and save lives:

🔥 Television Commercial (TVC)

Featuring a real child burn survivor, this emotionally powerful video opens with children answering the question:
“Who burnt you?”
Their reply—“My mom did”—delivers a heartbreaking truth, ending with the stark reminder:
“This tea stain never goes away.”

📚 “Izza’s Tea Party” – Storybook & Animation (in Urdu)

This warm, engaging story follows Izza, a 5-year-old girl visiting her grandparents for a tea party. Along with her bird Sonu and dog Ella, Izza teaches children:

  • To stay five steps away from hot stoves and liquids.
  • To share this safety rule with friends.
  • To learn basic first aid for scald burns.

The book includes a Parent Safety Pledge to reinforce accountability and protection at home.
