Protecting Children. Preventing Tragedy
Burn injuries are among the most devastating traumas a child can suffer—and yet, the majority are entirely preventable. At The House of Charity, we are committed to breaking this cycle through education, awareness, and community engagement.
The Facts Are Urgent
Every single day:
Why It Matters
A severe, non-fatal burn is one of the most painful and life-altering injuries a child can endure. Beyond physical trauma, burn injuries can have lasting emotional, social, and financial impacts—not just on the child, but on the entire family. Many families spend years coping with the consequences of an accident that could have been avoided.
But here’s the good news:
Our Mission
SafeSteps is The House of Charity’s dedicated initiative to prevent fire-related injuries and burn trauma through community education, family engagement, and culturally responsive learning. Our mission is simple:
To help people of all ages turn risky habits into lifelong safety behaviors.
By teaching safety through age-appropriate programs and empowering families with knowledge and tools, we aim to reduce preventable burn injuries and build safer, stronger communities.
Building Safer Communities Together
Our goal is simple yet urgent: Transform risky habits into safe practices through education, awareness, and accountability.
By empowering families with knowledge and tools, we can drastically reduce the number of burn injuries—saving lives, easing suffering, and creating safer futures for children everywhere.
Protecting Infants. Supporting Parents.
In proud association with the Children’s Burn Foundation Safety Smart Babies Program, created for expecting and new parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. It focuses on fire and burn prevention for infants and toddlers—who are among the most vulnerable to household injuries.
Why This Program Matters
Most burn injuries in early childhood happen in the home—and nearly all are preventable. SafeSteps: Babies empowers families with the knowledge and tools to recognize everyday risks and take action before harm occurs.

Their Impact:
Where Fire Safety Begins with Imagination
SafeSteps Stories is a powerful storytelling program designed to teach fire safety and burn prevention in a way children naturally understand—through stories. Using engaging characters, vibrant illustrations, and age-appropriate messages, we help children grasp life-saving concepts without fear or confusion.
How the Program Works
At the heart of SafeSteps Stories is our belief that education should spark curiosity, not fear. Each story introduces burn prevention lessons in a playful, culturally relevant way that sticks with children far beyond the page.
We bring these stories to life through:
📝 Books That Teach, Tools That Empower
Our featured book, “Izza’s Tea Party”, written by Hashmat Effendi, introduces young readers to safety rules like the “Five Steps Away” method to avoid hot surfaces and liquids. It’s more than a book—it’s a complete learning experience.
Each storytelling session includes:
🧸 The SafeSteps Story Nook
To deepen the impact, we also provide SafeSteps Story Nooks—mini libraries stocked with:
These shelves can be placed in schools, hospitals, clinics, libraries, and early childhood centers—giving children and families easy access to safety learning resources in moments of waiting or rest.

“This Tea Stain Never Goes Away.”
At The House of Charity, our experience caring for burn patients over two decades has revealed a painful truth: 80% of burns among children under the age of seven in both urban and rural Pakistan are caused by hot tea—and nearly all occur at home. With an estimated half a billion cups of tea prepared daily in Pakistan, the risk is widespread and deeply rooted in household habits.
In response to this alarming reality, we launched the Chai Ka Nishaan (The Tea Stain) Burn Prevention Campaign on November 1, 2019, in memory of Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed, a passionate advocate for public health and safety.
